DiDi
DiDi is China’s largest ride-hailing platform, covering the vast majority of cities. It’s the default option for foreign visitors.
How do foreigners use DiDi?
- Download the DiDi App from the App Store or Google Play. On Google Play, search for “DiDi — Ride Hailing App” (the China version) — the global DiDi app does not work properly in mainland China. If in doubt, install the app before departure.
- Register with a foreign mobile number — English UI is available in Settings.
- Add a payment method: Alipay, WeChat Pay, or bind a Visa/Mastercard directly in-app (Me → Wallet → Add card). All three are reliably accepted in DiDi as of 2026.
- Enter your destination and request a ride. Drivers are matched automatically.
What DiDi vehicle types are available?
| Type | Description |
|---|---|
| Express (快车) | Economy — most common |
| Taxi (出租车) | Book a metered taxi through DiDi; same metered fare as street hail |
| Premier (专车) | Comfort tier, better vehicles |
| Luxe (豪华车) | Business / executive |
| Hitch (顺风车) | Carpool — note: operational restrictions apply (gender rules for solo female passengers on late-night trips) |
Does DiDi offer bike-sharing?
DiDi also operates bike-sharing — open the DiDi app and scan the QR code on any DiDi-branded bike to unlock it.
Notes
- Destination entry: type the hotel name or address in Chinese (copy from Amap / your booking confirmation); the in-app map also accepts pin drops.
- Designated pickup points: DiDi cannot pick you up anywhere — the app assigns a specific pickup spot, which may be a 5-minute walk from where you are. Walk to the assigned point before the driver arrives; drivers will not wait long. (Source: Reddit r/travelchina, 2026-05-08)
- DiDi via Alipay: DiDi is available as a Mini Program inside the Alipay app — tap the DiDi icon on Alipay’s home screen. You do not strictly need a separate DiDi app if Alipay is already set up.
- Use the in-app translator to communicate with the driver if needed.
- Airports and high-speed rail stations have designated DiDi pickup zones — follow the in-app guidance to the right zone, not just the arrivals exit.
- For lost items, use DiDi’s in-app Lost & Found (My Trips → trip → Report Lost Item).
Practical Tips for Foreigners
- Alipay is the easiest payment method for DiDi. Set up Alipay first, then link it to DiDi. Foreign Visa/Mastercard can also be added directly in DiDi’s payment settings as an alternative.
- Drivers do not speak English. Use the in-app translation feature or have your destination pre-written in Chinese characters. Price is shown upfront — no negotiation needed. Drivers follow GPS with minimal communication required.
- Driver cancellations are common during rush hour when drivers are picky about destinations. Rebook immediately. If it happens repeatedly, try a different car type (e.g., switch from Express to Taxi) or walk to a busier pickup location.
- Typical ride cost: ¥10–30 for most city trips. This is 10–15x more expensive than the metro for equivalent distances.
- DiDi runs 24/7 — metro closes at ~11:30 PM, making DiDi the default for late-night travel.
- When DiDi is busy: Amap (高德地图) has taxi booking built in and aggregates multiple ride-hailing services. Use it as a fallback.
- Safe vs street taxis: DiDi is considered safer than street-hail taxis — rides are tracked, prices are fixed, driver identity is verified.
- Mini-program access: In WeChat or Alipay, search “滴滴出行” to open DiDi without a separate app download. Useful if you have Alipay set up but limited phone storage.
Is DiDi or the metro cheaper in China?
| Scenario (Beijing) | DiDi | Metro |
|---|---|---|
| Single city trip (5 km) | ~¥15–25 | ¥3–5 |
| Airport transfer | ~¥80–150 | ¥25 (airport express) |
| 3 rides in one day | ~¥60–90 | ¥20 (3-day unlimited pass) |
Recommendation: Use metro as default for 90% of daytime travel. Reserve DiDi for airports, late nights, luggage situations, rainy days, and groups of 3+ (where split cost makes DiDi competitive).
What are the alternatives to DiDi in China?
- Amap (高德地图): ride-hailing aggregator — calls multiple services at once including DiDi, useful for price comparison and as a fallback when DiDi is busy.
- Street taxi: hail on the street; metered fare; cash always accepted.
Frequently Asked Questions
- Can foreigners use DiDi in China?
- Yes. Register with a foreign phone number, or use the DiDi mini-program inside Alipay/WeChat with no separate signup, and pay through your bound card.
- How do I pay for DiDi?
- Link Alipay or WeChat Pay (or a foreign card in the app); fares are charged automatically at the end of the ride — no cash needed.
- How do I tell the DiDi driver where to go if I don't speak Chinese?
- Enter your destination in the app (search English names or paste Chinese) and DiDi sends it to the driver. The app shows the route, so little spoken Chinese is needed; messages can be auto-translated.
- What if the DiDi driver can't find me?
- Pick a clear pickup point (a mall entrance or landmark), watch the car on the map, and use the in-app call/message with translation, or share your trip for safety.
