WeChat / WeChat Pay
WeChat / WeChat Pay
WeChat (Tencent) is a super-app combining messaging, social networking, payments, and Mini Programs. It’s effectively required infrastructure for daily life and business communication in China.
Set up before you arrive — WeChat registration from a foreign number often triggers a contact-vouching step that requires a qualifying contact to be available. This cannot be arranged reliably from inside China.
How do I set up WeChat Pay as a foreigner?
- Download WeChat (App Store / Google Play).
- Register with a foreign mobile number. WeChat may require an existing contact to scan a QR code to verify your account (risk-control measure, high probability for foreign registrations). The contact must meet all four official conditions: registered 6+ months; WeChat Pay active 3+ months; has not vouched for another account in the past month; has not been banned in the past 6 months. There is no nationality or residency requirement. If no qualifying contact is available, WeChat in-app customer support can unlock the account but takes several days.
- Complete passport identity verification.
- Me → Services → Wallet → Bank Cards → Add Bank Card. Bind a Visa, Mastercard, or JCB. AMEX is bindable but has inconsistent merchant acceptance — use Visa or Mastercard as primary.
- Once verified, scan to pay or be scanned.
What are WeChat Pay’s fees and limits?
| Situation | Fee |
|---|---|
| Single payment under ¥200 | 0% WeChat surcharge |
| Single payment ¥200 or over | 3% surcharge on the full amount |
| Card FX fee | 1–3% (set by your bank) |
PBOC regulatory cap: ~¥36,000 per transaction for verified accounts; ~¥360,000 annual. Check your actual limit in-app: Wallet → Pay → Settings → Daily Limit.
What can I do with WeChat Pay?
- Scan to pay: works at virtually every merchant
- Wallet top-up: receive RMB transfers from Chinese contacts — credited to your WeChat Wallet and not subject to foreign-card limits
- Mini Programs: in-app services for delivery, hotels, tickets, and more
What are WeChat’s messaging features?
- Text / voice / video calls (free over data)
- Group chats and Moments (a social feed)
- Domestic contacts overwhelmingly use WeChat — including for business
Notes
- The account is tightly bound to your phone number — update promptly if the number changes.
- English UI: Settings → General → Language.
- WeChat interface changes frequently, making it harder to locate payment features than Alipay.
- Some services and exclusive mini-programs require WeChat Pay specifically and do not accept Alipay (source: realchinaguide.com 2026).
- Regional restrictions: Some regions block the foreign-card linking feature entirely. If stuck, use Alipay as primary and keep ¥200 cash for WeChat-only places.
What are WeChat mini-programs?
Mini Programs (小程序) are lightweight apps that run inside WeChat — no separate download or installation required. They behave like native apps but launch instantly from within WeChat’s interface.
How to Access
- Search: tap the search icon at the top of WeChat → type the Mini Program name → select results under the “Mini Programs” tab.
- QR code: scan a Mini Program QR code (printed at restaurant tables, hotel desks, attraction entrances) — WeChat opens it directly.
- Recently used: swipe down on the WeChat home screen to see your recently opened Mini Programs.

Why This Matters for Foreigners
Many Chinese services do not have a separate English-language website or iOS/Android app — their primary user interface is a WeChat Mini Program. If a local recommends “scan the QR code” or you see a QR code at a ticketing counter, it almost always opens a Mini Program. Knowing how to navigate this flow prevents confusion and gates access to services that are otherwise hard to reach.
Mini Program interfaces are usually Chinese-language; however, major hotel chains and some transit services include English options.
Mini Program Technical Details
- Lightweight: under 10MB, launch in under 1 second
- Inherit your WeChat Pay payment method automatically — no additional card setup needed
- Foreign Visa/Mastercard works if linked to WeChat Pay
- Recently opened mini-programs stay cached and work briefly offline, but QR codes and payments require an internet connection
- Pin frequently used mini-programs for instant access
